Mats Nilsson, our new conductor from the autumn 2003, will now
re-establish his relationship with the Stockholm Bach Choir, where he in early
days was a chorister and during a couple of years in the beginning of the 90th
conducted.
He obtained his Postgraduate Diploma in Choral Conducting at the Royal Academy
of Music in Stockholm. Earlier he earned his Master of Music degree with piano
studies under Greta Erikson and conducting studies with Eric Ericson as his main
teacher and orchestra conducting with Kjell Ingebretsen and Jorma Panula. He now
and then travels to England for studies in early music för Andrew Parrott, Oxford, and others.
Mats has recently returned to Sweden after five years as Musical Director for
Sydney Philharmonia Choirs, Australia’s largest choral organisation performing
most of their concerts in the Sydney Opera House. During his time in Sydney he
conducted his choirs in several choral works such as Verdi’s Requiem, Mozart’s
C minor mass and most main choral works by Bach.
He was also a lecturer in choral conducting at Sydney Conservatorium of Music.
Mats Nilsson is now lecturer in choral conducting at Royal Academy of Music, Stockholm,
and often engaged as conductor and educator on a free lance basis. He
has worked with several choirs as his own Mats Nilsson Vocal Ensemble, the
Swedish Radio Choir, the Latvian Radio Choir, the Gothenburg Symphony Chorus and
Coro di Santa Cecilia, Rome. As a chorus master he has collaborated with
esteemed conductors as Neeme Järvi, Charles Dutoit, Claudio Abbado and
Myung-Whun Chung.
Amongst orchestras he has conducted are Gothenburg Symphony Orchestra, Sydney
Philharmonia Orchestra and Tasmanian Symphony Orchestra.
